The Island Classic Charity Golf Tournament

A magnificent 9 hole golf course layout awaits to challenge both high and low handicappers. The beautiful manicured grass course is imaginative in its design and picturesque in its presentation. Strategically placed lakes, which add beauty to the pleasant surroundings, are ever present to accept errant balls, while good shots are rewarded by perfect lies on the lush fairways or by holding on the gently undulating greens.

At first glance, one could be forgiven for thinking that this relatively short course does not test one’s golfing ability, but then the prevailing winds of varying strengths come into play, adding to the difficulty built into the course layout. From every angle there is a challenge. And this is what has pushed the seasoned golfers to return year after year to play at the American Mission Hospital Island Classic Charity Golf Tournament.

In the year 1997, the American Mission Hospital which was operating as a not for profit society, needed extra funds to construct a building on the land opposite to the original hospital. The new building would be connected to the old building by an overhead bridge. To meet the cash requirement, the fundraising committee (made up of members of the American Mission Hospital and the American Association of Bahrain) came up with an idea conduct a golf tournament.  This was the inception of the Island Classic.

His Majesty the King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa (the Crown prince then) very kindly agreed to offer the historical hospital to conduct the event at His private golf course in Saffriya. Organizations rushed to sponsor the event and get a chance to play on the coveted golf course. Over the next five years the hospital raised enough funds to complete the construction of the new building which is now known as the 2000 building.

By then the event had gained tremendous popularity and every year amateur and professional golfers alike waited for the opportunity to play at the golf course for the title of Premier winners for high handicap teams and Championship winners for low handicap teams. His Majesty the King continued to provide his kind patronage and with the encouragement and guidance of the Royal Court, the event got itself a permanent place in the social and golfing calendar of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

2017 marked the 20th Anniversary of the AMH Island Classic charity golf tournament.  Funds raised after the construction of the 2000 building were diverted towards opening specialized clinics, purchasing much needed medical equipment  and more recently towards the community outreach programs of the hospital, which are aimed at providing medical awareness and health checks in order to pave the way for a much healthier Bahrain.

Community Outreach Programs of AMH

Outreach is defined as an activity of providing services to any population who might not otherwise have access to these services. Outreach is often meant to fill in the gap in the services provided by mainstream services and more often is carried out by non-profit, nongovernmental organizations.

If this is the criteria for Community Outreach, American Mission Hospital is no stranger to fulfilling this social responsibility. The pioneers of the hospital who landed on these shores, through their generous spirit and willingness to be involved became a natural extension of the community. They provided medical help and hope where there was previously none.

Though American Mission Hospital continued their philanthropic approach to medical services, it was again only in 2004 that the Community Outreach Program was re-launched with a aim of reaching out to the less privileged masses.

Since 2004, American Mission has conducted innumerable Community related events with the aim of creating a better and healthier society. AMH believes that the key to enhance the health of people in the community is through educational awareness. With this in mind, many of the outreach programs not only include medical checks but educational awareness lectures and presentations.

American Mission Hospital has worked with corporate organizations, labor camps, rehabilitation centers, special needs centers, schools, social centers and orphanages to name a few. Special programs centering around breast cancer and other medical  conditions are held regularly throughout the kingdom.

2018 C3 US-Arab Healthcare & Business Summit

Dr. George Cheriyan, Corporate CEO of American Mission Hospital, Bahrain will be attending the 2018 C3 US-Arab Healthcare & Business Summit held in New York, United States Of America on 24 September 2018 and representing Bahrain.

He will be talking about the subject on

Preventable Medical Care: The Science of Improving Quality of Life Against the Battle of Disease “Preventive medical care includes all healthcare services intended to prevent illness, detect health problems before any symptoms occur, and reduce the damage caused by symptomatic diseases. It is known that 70% of all healthcare costs are direct results of behavior, and that 74% of all costs are confined to four chronic conditions: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Furthermore, 80% of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is preventable, and 90% of obesity is preventable. The #1 and #2 causes of disability in the USA and UAE respectively, are neck/back pain and migraine. Studies show headaches to be the #1 cause of lost productivity in the workplace with the UAE having the highest prevalence of migraine in the world. Preventive healthcare strategies take place at the primal, primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention levels.

A number of studies have shown that preventive medicine is a good investment. Services of daily aspirin use; tobacco cessation support; diet and exercise; cancer screening; immunization; and illegal substance screening for example can potentially save thousands of lives and millions of dollars annually. Headache and migraine prevention is possible with patient self-treatment. Our panel of professionals will discuss the logistical and procedural considerations of integrating preventative solutions.”
